Healing Benefits of Meditation, Part 2

In my capacity as a mental health counselor, I have discerned recurrent patterns in the manifestation of human suffering. Primarily, it is imperative to recognize the universality inherent in the experience of suffering.Often, suffering arises when individuals feel disconnected from themselves, essentially living an unconscious life. Living an unconscious life refers to a state where individuals go through daily experiences without being fully aware or present with what you are doing or what is happening in the moment.

Instead, you are either ruminating about the past or creating a story about the future and then acting as if they are happening—in the present moment. Unconsciousness involves a lack of mindfulness, self-reflection, and conscious engagement with one’s thoughts and emotions. This can lead to a sense of disconnection from yourself, contributing to emotional struggles and difficulties in navigating the self and relationships with intention and purpose.

Continuing with Part 2 on The Benefits of Meditation, I am sharing a Brother Phap Huu’s podcast on the “how tos” highlighting the importance of meditation for healing, connection, and finding peace and contentment in life.

In This Meditation Podcast:

And why is sitting meditation the hardest practice? Is it essential to meditate in order to be a good practitioner of mindfulness? How can one ease oneself into attention? What difference does paying attention to our breathing actually make? These and many other questions are answered in this installment of the podcast.

This episode, the first of a two-part special, explains and breaks down the practice of breathing exercises one to eight. It includes the exercises’ traditional texts, revised versions (plus the reasons for their revision), and variations and adaptations, with extensive explanations given by the two monastics about how to apply each one to our daily lives.

In addition, stories are shared about Thich Nhat Hanh practicing meditation, as well as the concrete steps taken and challenges faced over time by both Brother Phap Huu and Sister True Dedication.
