Women in Agriculture

Women in agriculture are the unsung hero. These remarkable farmers have to juggle multiple responsibilities, from tending to crops, livestock, maintenance, business management, children, mental health, and managing households. The demanding nature of their work, combined with societal norms, can contribute to unnecessary stress and mental health challenges.

Women farmers navigate a unique set of mental health challenges deeply intertwined with their roles in agriculture. The constant demands of farm life, combined with societal expectations and gender-specific pressures, contribute to heightened stress levels. Balancing responsibilities on the farm and at home, women farmers often grapple with the complex interplay of family needs, financial strains, and the inherent uncertainties of agricultural work. Limited access to resources, both in terms of support networks and mental health services, exacerbates their struggles. Addressing these specific challenges is paramount, as it not only enhances the well-being of women farmers but also contributes to the overall resilience and sustainability of agriculture communities. Initiatives aimed at recognizing and mitigating these challenges can pave the way for a more supportive and inclusive environment for women in agriculture.

Women in farming play a pivotal role in global food production and agricultural sustainability. Despite facing unique challenges, such as limited access to resources and gender-based disparities, women farmers significantly contribute to the resilience of agricultural communities. Recognizing and empowering women in agriculture is not only a matter of gender equality but also a strategic investment in food and beverage security and the overall well-being of farming culture. By promoting inclusivity and providing equal opportunities, we enhance the agricultural sector’s diversity and unlock its full potential for growth and innovation.

As in many other industries, women’s contributions are historically overlooked. Women feel the impact of not being seen, heard, or valued in their own community of farming or in society as a whole. Therefore, it is my intention and an honor to give women in agriculture recognition and respect that they have rightfully earned and deserve. Efforts to enhance mental health understanding in this context includes tailored support, mental health counseling, awareness campaigns, and initiatives that acknowledge and address the specific needs of the specialized and unique women.

Keynote Presentation

Here is access to some of Catherine’s keynote presentation used for the 2024 Women in Ag Day, Avon, NY.

Catherine – I really enjoyed your talk today – the best “mental health in ag” presentation I have heard – open, honest, and experienced with none of the faux sympathetic hand-wringing that has annoyed me in other talks. Thanks! DWD

I want to express my gratitude to the many women of the farming community who attended this even. It was well organized, diverse, and shared valuable information. Special thanks to Leslie Stein of River Ridge Farms, and Stephanie Hann, Chief of Staff for NYS Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes, for inviting me as the keynote speaker to address the critical topic of mental health among farmers.
