Deprograming From Convictions That No Longer Serve You

Convictions

Convictions are deeply held beliefs or principles that you consider to be true and unshakable. They serve as guides that direct your actions, decisions, and general outlook.

However, convictions can also provide a false sense of certainty and commitment that blind you from your fear of uncertainty and unwanted changes (read more about Part X—primal fears). And, there are times when these programmed convictions and belief systems directly oppose your intuition and can conflict with your inner alignment and general well-being.

Everyone’s life is shaped by environmental factors and belief systems in ways you did not consciously choose, and many of these influences stem from concrete systems—family dynamics, cultural beliefs, and societal norms. While these systems may have helped you survive or fit in, they can also limit your growth and disconnect you from your true self and your life’s path. Deprogramming your mindset from conflicting influences is an act of liberation, healing, and spiritual alignment.

How can I deprogram myself from convictions that no longer serve me?

Understanding the Sources of Conditioning

1. Family Trauma and Environment

The family environment is where your foundational beliefs and behaviors are formed. Patterns of shame, fear, or perfectionism can be passed down unconsciously, shaping how you view yourself and the world. Recognizing these inherited patterns is the first step in breaking free from them.

2. Collective Cultural Beliefs

Many cultural norms, such as unhealthy eating habits or overconsumption of alcohol, are so ingrained that they seem normal. These collective practices often serve as coping mechanisms for unresolved pain and disconnection. Cultural norms can also perpetuate cycles of unhealthy behaviors toward yourself, others, and the environment.

3. Maladaptive Belief Systems

Maladaptive beliefs are those that inhibit your ability to thrive in a healthy and meaningful way. Promoted through education systems, work environments, and media, they often prioritize productivity, competition, and material success over authenticity, connection, and well-being. These beliefs can block you from accessing your intuition and aligning with your purpose.

What have I been taught in my lifetime that is not true or helpful?

How to Deprogram and Self-Connect

1. Begin a Daily Gratitude Practice

Gratitude is a powerful tool for shifting perspectives and reconnecting to what truly matters. Each day, express gratitude for:

Yourself: Acknowledge your resilience, your abundance, creativity, and capacity to learn.

Others: Honor the relationships and communities that support you.

Your Ancestors: Recognize their sacrifices and strengths that have made it possible for you to be here.

The Spiritual Realm: Connect to the higher powers or energies that guide and sustain you.

Indigenous Peoples: Hold space for the land’s original stewards and the wisdom it carries.

The Natural World: Spend time in nature to reaffirm your belonging to the Earth and its rhythms.

A gratitude, gratefulness, and graciousness practice not only cultivates humility, optimism, and deep connection but also creates a foundation for healing and change.

2. Choose Differently by Listening to Your Intuition

Your intuition is your sacred guide and it is in there! Unfortunately, it is often muffled by coping mechanisms and a protective ego that fears unwanted change and uncertainty. Develop a practice to:

Pause: Create moments of stillness and silence to hear your inner voice and see what comes up, without analysis—trust this process.

Question: Ask yourself whether your choices and programmed beliefs align with your deeper values and authentic truths.

Trust: Allow yourself to make decisions that feel aligned, even if they oppose, challenge, or ignore societal expectations and familiar maladaptive choices.

Intuition grows stronger the more you listen and tune into it. Choose paths that support your well-being and spiritual alignment.

3. Don’t Engage With Other’s Protections and Judgements

This is probably the most difficult practice: how to not respond or to deflect when someone is questioning, criticizing, or dismissing your life choices.

When you engage with other people’s judgments, you disconnect from your own truth and allow their perceptions to weigh you down. In The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz teaches, Don’t Take Anything Personally reminding you that what others say or think about you is a reflection of their own beliefs and experiences, not a statement about your worth. By taking their judgments personally, you risk losing sight of your authentic self and allowing external opinions to disrupt your peace. When you choose not to engage, you honor your inner wisdom and create space to remain aligned with your values and purpose.

This practice is difficult but highly valuable because it helps you to stay true, clear, and free from the need for people pleasing and external validation.

Final Thoughts

Deprogramming is not about rejecting everything you know—it’s more about discerning what serves your inner spirit and what does not. By cultivating gratitude and reconnecting to your intuition, you can begin to release the programming that no longer serves you and embrace a life of authenticity, connection, and spiritual alignment. This process is both challenging and transformative, and it leads to a deeper sense of freedom, belonging, and inner peace.
